Preventive Dental Cleanings
Your Best Investment in Dentistry is Preventive Care
With rising health care costs, most patients are looking for ways to avoid problems by staying on schedule with their preventive and wellness visits. Today, most modern dentistry is primarily about helping patients prevent tooth decay, gum disease and broken teeth due to bite problems or crooked teeth.
Dental Care at Home
Proper oral health begins with good brushing and flossing habits at home. The American Dental Association® recommends brushing twice daily for two minutes and flossing at least once a day.
Whether you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, cleaning all of the surfaces of the teeth thoroughly can help keep harmful bacteria levels in the mouth to a minimum. Flossing is critical to remove plaque and bacterial deposits between the teeth, as brushing alone can't clean these areas. The saliva processes in the mouth slow down during sleep, so going to bed with a squeaky clean mouth is very important!
There is no substitute for regular dental examinations by your dentist, 2-4 times per year. During these visits, family dentists Dr. DeShazer or Dr. Leverton will examine your teeth thoroughly and may recommend necessary digital x-rays to view areas between the teeth and below the gum line. After a complete assessment, your dentist will advise you of any conditions that require attention.
We may recommend fluoride treatments, sealants, special toothpaste or rinses to help protect you or your child's teeth from harmful decay-causing bacteria. Patients that take a number of medications often experience side effects such as dry mouth (xerostomia). We may recommend saliva replacements or xylitol products to help manage this condition.
Periodontal (gum) disease is on the rise.
An oral infection, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Signs of periodontal disease include:
- Bleeding gums during brushing
- Bad taste in the mouth
- Inflamed, puffy or red gums
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
Periodontal disease doesn't hurt. Our dentists and hygienists will check the gums and bone levels via oral examination and dental x-rays during the preventive cleaning appointment to look for signs and symptoms of periodontal disease.
It is important to treat periodontal disease early to stop the destructive progress of infection, which can penetrate into the bone and cause teeth to become loose and fall out.
If detected early, most periodontal treatment can be completed using a non-surgical approach in the comfort of our office. We may ask a specialist, or periodontist, to assist in cases of moderate to progressive periodontal disease.
