Dentistry for Patients of all Ages
Dental needs change as we mature, as do the procedures and preventive measures that we take to address them. Our family dental care services include a preventive care program to help you maintain proper oral health, and restorative services to repair and rebuild your smile as necessary to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
Children's dentistry is primarily about education on good home care habits and nutrition, along with services that help prevent tooth decay, such as cleanings, sealants and fluoride treatments. We also monitor your child's dental development and orthodontic condition, and may recommend an orthodontist if we see any alignment or tooth eruption challenges that might require orthodontic care.
With teens and young adults, we continue to be concerned with prevention of tooth decay, along with gum conditions that are caused by harmful oral bacteria, including gingivitis and periodontal disease (gum infection). U.S. health statistics show that adults have a 50% chance of developing periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can cause damage to the surrounding jaw bone and eventually, tooth loss.
As part of regular dental health maintenance visits, our dentists examine the oral soft tissues to look for suspicious areas that might be an early warning sign of oral cancer. This life-threatening condition is on the rise in young adults.
Our maturing adult patients often take a number of medications, so we stay on the lookout for a condition known as 'dry mouth' (xerostomia) and other symptoms related to medication side effects. We also diligently monitor our adult patients' dental health for any signs of tooth wear and restoration breakdown, as well as periodontal disease. The connection between oral health and overall physical health is a well-documented relationship; infection or inflammation in the mouth (such as with periodontal disease) can create complications for patients with diabetes, heart disease, arthritis or other illnesses.
